January 2007Our Story
Well, thanks for the funny card, especially with the artistic picture of Junheng. Ah yes, the License to Bullshit as well, and HEY, who took that ugly picture?!
Your class, out of all three of mine, has to be the most well behaved, but that was also partly why I couldn’t get closer to many of you. Honestly, it was regrettable that you guys are the most detached from me, although the class was generally accepting of me. So many of you are so quiet, which puts me at a difficult spot to get to know you guys properly, especially since I’m not your CT. It was really a pity since everyone is an individual and there are different things to tell to each and everyone of you if I had known you guys better.
I had sought to be more of a senior and a friend than a real teacher, since I’m not all that much older, and also because I had always wanted my teachers to be more approachable and friendly when I was in JC. This was why I did many things in class that seemed unprofessional, because I felt that if I were to bring things to your level, it will be easier to learn. I was teaching by applying the method by which I studied last time. I think I may have gave you guys a rather weird impression at first, and I think many of you might have been unhappy at your class being allocated a relief tutor. Of course, most people would feel that a relief tutor will suck in comparison to the real trained ones. Till now, I don’t claim that I am any better than any other teacher; I just hope that I have managed to increase your interest in the subject and in studying, even just that little bit.
When I came back to teach I was totally clueless what to do with my classes. As many will know, being good at studying doesn’t necessarily mean you can put across what you have learnt to another person. To that end, I tried to emulate what my teacher did, but realized soon that I used to sleep during lessons, and I didn’t want to drowse the whole class. In the end, after watching the anime GTO, I decided to use my own methods, no matter how unorthodox, hoping it might get through to you guys better. I was rather happy that you guys enjoyed the atomic structure overviews, using very weird analogies that I believe none of you really expected.
I won’t dare to claim the credit of you guys getting the top non STP for Lect Test 2, because this class really has much potential. It was a relief that I didn’t mess you guys up. So many of you have the ability to score, but what you need is the extra motivation, as well as confidence in your own abilities, which I seldom sense in you guys. Confidence goes a long way, bolstering everything you do in very subtle but significant amounts. So do believe that you can do it, and never think of yourself as stupid or what. If anything you guys have the potential to rise much higher than you are right now, in addition to being a class with much participation in school activities, with the number of councilors in your class.
So as I leave you guys, I just want you guys to remember some of what I have told you. Continue to challenge and improve yourself, and don’t suffer in silence when you don’t understand, because understanding your foundations is the most important thing right now. Ask, and don’t be afraid to ask, especially the girls. No one will kill you for asking what you think are silly questions, but you will look a fool forever if you don’t clarify. Speak up and participate more during class, not just sit and listen, because when you participate you apply your knowledge immediately as you learn it, which will lock it in you more tightly. Challenge when in doubt, don’t just accept everything straight on. Of course, in the process of challenging academics, don’t neglect your class spirit, and keep together as a class for two years; make it an unforgettable experience for everyone.
