hey its the microsoft court case agn, resurfacing after blocks. anyway we have to prepare for it, it's on this friday 6th July during econs lesson. Have fun! (lol)

-----
The most significant antitrust case in the last decade was US Justice Department's (DOJ's) case against Microsoft Corporation. The DOJ accused Microsoft of engaging in a pattern of "predatory conduct" to protect its operating-system monopoly and to extend that monopoly into internet software. Microsoft disputed the charges and said the govt was interfering with its right to create new products that benefit consumers.

After 78 days of testimony and months of deliberation, Judge Thomas Penfield Jackson ruled that Microsoft maintained a monopoly in operating-system software by anticompetitive means. He also found that Microsoft attempted to monopolise the web browser market by unlawfully "tying" Internet Explorer with Windows. As a remedy, Judge Jackson proposed restricting Microsoft's business practices and dividing the firm into a Window-based operating-system company and an applications-software company. Microsoft appealed the decision to the US Court of Appeals. This court upheld the finding that Microsoft violated antitrust laws and acted illegally in maintaining a monopoly in its operating system.
